Early detection and screening for the disadvantaged, aboriginal, culturally and linguistically diverse background in Australia

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a disease, which may cause death if not diagnosed early. It is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. Male breast cancer also exists.
Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milkducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. If untreated, the tumour(s) may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or blood stream.
Breast cancer is not contagious and anyone can develop this disease at any age. However, it becomes more common as you get older, with 75 percent of cases occuring in women 50 years and over. The majority with breast cancer have no known significant family history or other known risk factors.
